For melee on horseback, you want either a couchable lance or swing polearm like a glaive. Swinging is much better for overall damage output but some people just like the satisfaction of hitting with a couched lance. Custom weapons with specific parts will let you do both. 2H weapons can work on horseback but you need them to be very long. Close the distance, swingable glaive will beat sword and board every time. Thing is though, this custom weapon can be crafted in mass and doesn't require you to find it or have the gold for it. Also, in comparison, this custom weapon has -5 length, +1 swing speed, and +1 handling. It can have even more stats when the "master smith" perk triggers. My "masterwork" variant stats: Weight: 1.4.

Smelt all the weapons you loot and buy any pugios and throwing daggers can find to smelt them too. Then do the requests in every town. Even failing them gets you 6 times as much xp as just making the weapon.
