Ecobee add a wire
The only benefit I could see of running new wire is adding not only a C-wire but also accessory wire (s) in case you decide you want to control humidifier (s) and/or other hardware. I wired my Ecobee3 with a PEK at first, but had an HVAC technician pull new wire (and add a C-wire) because I needed the ecobee to be able to control a humidifier.

I had Red & White Wire from furnace, but I needed power to the thermostat. I bought a 24 volt transformer. I ran transformer wires up to the location of the thermostat. Attached the Red Wire to the R Lug & the White Wire to the W Lug on the New plate than Attached one of the transformer wires to the C Lug & the other to the RC Lug.Unscrew the two wires from the terminals. Remove the motherboard of the old 2 wire thermostat and put the new 2 wire thermostat in its place. Reconnect the red and white wire, tighten down the set screw, and put the control panel back on. Test the 2 wire thermostat wiring by turning the furnace on.Turns out this is what it does: R (24V source) gets passed right through the PEK to connect the thermostat & furnace as normal W (heat) gets passed right through the PEK as well, unchanged.
