The Exploratorium was created by Frank Oppenheimer, brother of famed theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Frank transitioned into an academic career in the late 1940s. The field trips and various experiments that he did with his students became the prototypes for the exhibits at the Exploratorium.
